Solo Project with feedback from mentor and peers

Disclaimer: I do not work for Disney+, and the views in this case study are strictly my own. The context of this case study is purely speculative for a student project, and meant to be learning experience on a product I deeply admire.

PROJECT CONTEXT

2021: Missing going to the theater with friends

April 2021: It's been months since fans and movie goers have been able to go to the theaters, let alone attend community-like events such as red carpets and movie premiers.

There were so many releases coming to Disney+ at the time — from the Pixar's Soul in December 2020 to Raya and the last Dragon in March that were unable to have the wonderful theatrical releases they deserved. I was curious to see how maybe Disney+ could introduce a way to share new content with their users while allowing fans to have a more interactive and social experience with the platform.

How can we bring back the theater experience?
The Challenge ⚡️

How might we add value and delight to Disney+ so their subscribers feel connected to other users and stay engaged in the content?

DIVING INTO RESEARCH

Some assumptions I wanted to validate...

As I began brainstorming potential avenues to explore how to add value to Disney+'s existing platform, my initial assumptions were:
  • Disney+’s success has been a product of old titles & releasing new original content.
  • Since theatrical releases due to COVID-19 have been limited, Disney+ could continue to capitalize on their growing success by simulating a movie-premiere community experience with exclusive content.
  • Disney+ is better when watched and experienced together.
This ultimately led me to my four main research goals:

01.

Uncover why users subscribe to some platforms and not others.

02.

Discover what about Disney+ is unique and why users choose to subscribe to it.

03.

Discover what users miss most about in-person theater experiences and explore how that can be translated into a digital experience.

04.

Better understand user viewing behavior and how users prefer to engage in what they’re watching.

Insights 💡

Competitive Analysis
  • No current live entertainment options at the base subscription plan, and a lack of community.
  • Disney+ is the 3rd most subscribed platform, but has one of the strongest fanbases.
Competitive Edge
  • Disney+ has the potential to position itself as a leader of live entertainment in the market.
  • With such a loyal existing fanbase, Disney+ would benefit the most from building 'togetherness'.
User Surveys
  • Validated assumption: Users subscribed due to a mix of new & old content.
  • Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars are the top three franchises fans are drawn to.
Content Focus
  • Premiere not only new content, but also showcase old content (through special anniversary premieres, etc.)
  • Focus on exclusive & behind-the-scenes content with actors/producers within the most popular franchises.
User Interviews
  • Best part of in-person movie experience is feeling connected to audience experiencing the same thing.
  • Validated Assumption: Users primarily watch Disney+ in groups.
Building Community
  • Focus on creating a way for audiences to have a shared experience and potentially share reactions.
  • Emphasize the community aspect of premieres to bring users together and increase motivation to watch with family and friends.

USER PERSONAS

Meet our Disney+ Users!

After synthesizing the data from user surveys and interviews, Aaron and Irene were born as two distinct types of ideal Disney+ users. Their personas represent the main goals, frustrations, and overall behaviors of our users, and serve as a reference in the design process to ensure that all our flows and design solutions are supported by their goals and needs.

DEFINE

FEATURE PRIORITIZATION

What would excite users the most?

In order to truly narrow the scope down from the ideation phase, I began to list all potential features out so I could sort them in an Effort/Impact Matrix.

I wanted to focus on the ideas that would best excite and entice Disney+ subscribers to attend premieres. Sorting them by high/low impact/effort helped me consider the feasibility and necessity of each feature and prioritize moving forward.

IDEATE

SKETCHING & IDEATION

One of the biggest challenges was thinking about all the different Premieres contexts

From learning about how premieres work, signing up to be reminded, joining the day of the premiere, joining late, watching previous premieres, there were lots of situations to consider. Sketching really helped me better understand the various contexts that users would navigate the new feature, and begin ideating all the different pathways users could discover and interact with the new feature. INTERACTION

Understanding use cases

1. Task Flow

In order to better understand the various use cases I would design for, I utilized a task flow to break down scenarios in which a user would complete a series of tasks based on the time and context they’re accessing the premiere. It helped me ensure I was designing fluid screens that successfully allowed the user to get to each end point.

2. User Flow

Having set my tasks, I embedded them within a user flow with more specific scenarios that pertained to our personas and how they might navigate the new premiere feature. Mapping out all user decisions highlighted the various paths, entry points, and endings to each scenario, helping me understand how all the screens connect.

PROTOTYPE & TEST

Manipulating Screens into High-Fi

Using BrowseShot and Photoshop, I was able to take scrolling screenshots and directly layer and implement my feature onto existing Disney+ UI elements, creating a familiar and integrated look and feel to the feature. Doing research on the upcoming Disney+ content between the months of June-July, imaging what content would have premiered in the past months, as well as seeing which old classic Disney films could be screened in special anniversary premieres added a delightful and believable quality to the feature.

USABILITY TESTING

Let's hear what the viewers have to say!

Using Maze, I conducted usability tests to determine whether this new feature achieved my high level design goals. Since this was a conceptual project, there wasn’t a direct way for me to quantify how it could retain and grow Disney+’s user base, but user feedback was crucial in validating my design goals of adding delight. I tested four scenarios for overall feature discoverability, ease of navigation, and to gauge how delightful and valuable users found the service.
Heatmaps showing screen metrics and average clicks for the user
Successes 👍
  • No task failures!
  • Navigation of all tasks was intuitive, and accessible.
  • Overall UI was very familiar and similar to existing Disney+ interface and integrated well.
  • 2 users felt the new feature would make them feel more excited and motivated to watch new content.
Suggestions/Opportunities 🤔
  • 2 users voiced concern about the visibility of the Mickey “Ask a question icon” without labeling.
  • 2 users expressed concern about the way users ask a question and the feedback they receive.
  • 1 user felt the Premiere pop-up explanation was too lengthy.
Pain Points/Confusions 👎
  • 2 users confused about how the reminder feature works.
  • 1 user expressed confusion between past premiere streams having differing thumbnails to the show it premiered with after the live.

PRIORITY REVISIONS

Implementing insights to improve discoverability and delightfulness

Insight 1: Asking a Question

"What if I forgot what I asked? How will I know the team received it? What if someone asks something inappropriate?"
- Participant 2

Version 1

👎 Feels like submitting a form, more arduous
👎 Can’t view your question after submitting; poor feedback
👎 Response isn't customizable

Version 2

👍 More conversational “chat box” style makes asking a question feel more organic, casual, and delightful
👍 Can view and reference your question after sending
👍 Auto chat-style response allows for feedback on your question (ie. you’ll receive notice if your question was inappropriate, etc.)

Insight 2: Premiere Pop Up

"I feel kinda overwhelmed by the amount of info presented to me."
- Participant 2

Premiere Pop Up - Version 1

👎 Lengthy, and difficult to scan
👎 Can be overwhelming for the user to digest

Premiere Pop Up - Version 2

👍 Shortened bullets and paragraphs makes info more scannable
👍 Only most relevant info is shown; better utilization of the “for more information” link
Asking a Question - Version 1
👎 Feels like submitting a form, more arduous and less delightful
👎 Can’t view your question after submitting; poor feedback
👎 Thank you message is not customizable
Asking a Question - Version 2
👍 More conversational “chat box” style makes asking a question feel more organic, casual, and delightful
👍 Can view and reference your question after sending

Premiere Pop Up - V1
👍 Shortened bullets and paragraphs makes the info more effortless to read
👍 Only most relevant info is shown; better utilization of the “for more information” link
Ask a Question Icon - V1
👎 Outline with small details inside the hand and size of icon makes it difficult to see
Ask a Question Icon - V2
👍 Filled in style increases visibility
👍 Filled in style matches other icon styles
Homepage - Version 1
👎 Not as much visibility for new premieres feature - only indication is new Premiere tab and the banner carousel
Homepage - Version 2
👍 Added row of “Premieres” increases visibility for the new feature and makes the feature more accessible and discoverable to users who wouldn’t notice or click on the Premiere tab
Premiere Email Reminder
To clarify how the “Reminder” function works, I created a Disney+ email reminder as a companion piece to show how I was envisioning the full picture of the experience.

The idea behind the reminder was that after a user signs up, they would be emailed an e-ticket to the event. On the actual day of the premiere, the user will be emailed an additional reminder email thirty minutes before the stream begins so they can open the premiere, and wait in the wait room.

FINAL PRODUCT

REFLECTION

Thoughts &
 Lessons Learned

Consuming digital entertainment has become a staple part of the quarantine existence for me and so I was really inspired to think about how I could create a way for audiences to connect over this shared experience. I’ve always been amazed at the magic that the teams at Disney+ bring to their original content and really enjoyed stepping into their shoes to think of creative ways to excite and engage their users. I’m excited to see the possibility of how entertainment and streaming services will begin to utilize livestreams in the future, and continue to innovate to make the digital streaming experience more interconnected and joyful.

There is so much to learn when implementing a new feature into an existing product. I had to deep dive to really understand and implement UI elements that were consistent to the existing Disney+ brand guidelines, while also incorporating new live-streaming elements in a way that is familiar and understandable to the user.

FUTURE ROADMAP

Next Steps

If I had more time to continue iterations, I would have loved to explore how this feature would translate onto various devices and what new features could come within each — from ideas of voice activation to ask questions on Smart TV’s, to maybe integrating a complete new notification system so users could receive delightful reminders on mobile — the opportunities are endless!
